History of Blackjack
The origin of Blackjack is still heavily debated to this day. Most researchers can agree that it originated in French casinos around the year 1700. The French game was initially called “Vingt-et-Un,” which translates “twenty-one.” It’s believed that Blackjack is derived from the card games “Chemin de Fer” and “French Ferme,” which were very popular at the time. The game is believed to have been played at the French Royal Court while King Louis XV reigned. However, there is a theory surrounding the game that the Romans invented it. It is thought that they played the game with wooden blocks that had different numbers on them. The theory holds water because Romans loved to gamble, but it can’t be confirmed.
Vingt-et-Un wasn’t able to fully develop in France during the 19th century. However, that same time, the game was brought to America and was thriving! It would first be seen in legalized gambling halls in New Orleans, Louisiana, which was the first “go to” place for gambling. Also, at this time, it is said that a woman who immigrated from France named Eleanor Dumont. She was a skilled dealer who traveled all over until she decided to open her own gambling hall in Nevada City, California, she ironically named it “Vingt-et-Un.” People came from all over the country to play against her. It wasn’t until the 20th century, also known as The Great Era of the Casinos that 21 finally changed its name to Blackjack.
