The History of Roulette
There are a lot of conspiracies surrounding the origin of Roulette. Some believe it was invented by a French monk who was looking to alleviate the monotony of the simple life in the monastery. Others believe French Dominican monks created Roulette and based it off of and old Tibetan game where the object was to organize animal statuettes into the magic number square of 666. The game is believed to have come from China, but unfortunately there is no method of play that is recorded. However, the most widely accepted origin story is that it was invented around the 17th century by a French scientist named Blaise Pascal during a monastic retreat. The game is reported to be first played in a casino in Paris.
Fast forward to the 19th century, two men Francois and Lois blanc designed a Roulette wheel with a single zero on it. This was built specifically for King Charles III of Monaco. This was huge because it gave the house a bigger house edge. King Charles brought this wheel to the people. This helped generate a ton of income for the country. The timing couldn’t have been better for Monaco’s economy because their single zero Roulette wheel hit the market at the same time France decided to outlaw gambling, making Monte Carlo’s lifestyle of upscale gambling all the more appealing.
